Are you struggling with debt and wondering where to turn for advice? Well, you could listen to your friends – but it’s hard to discuss money problems with your friends. Or you could respond to to a TV or radio ad and get professional help – but even bad companies can look good with a fancy website. Of course, you can listen to the experts for advice, right?

Keep in mind that most financial “experts” you see on television have never been in debt. So not all of their advice works in the real world. In fact, here are 3 things the experts don’t tell you about getting out of debt:

The most important factor of all for getting out of debt is you!

There are lots of different debt relief methods. All work, to some degree. But most people don’t stick with them anyway. Statistics show that nearly 75% of all people who sign up with a debt relief program DO NOT stick with it. So it’s less important which one you pick. And more important to make a serious commitment to doing whatever it takes to get out of debt. Otherwise, you won’t get there. You might try real hard. But you won’t finish. Because money will get tight, and you’ll use your credit cards again. So if you’re serious, write down your goal, read it out loud to yourself every day, and keep telling yourself you’ll stick with it!

You can do it all by yourself, but should you?

There are lots of things in life you can do yourself – wash your car or change the oil, do your taxes, fix broken things around the house – but many people would rather pay someone else to do it. Why? Because its easier. Because it saves you time. Because you are paying for their expertise. And because you know it will get done. When it comes to getting out of debt, it’s so easy to just say to yourself “forget it, this is too hard, I’m going back to the old way”. So, if you have the discipline to do it yourself, go for it. But if you’re like most people, start shopping around to find a good debt relief company to help you reach your goal.

3) If you don’t care…neither do the credit card companies!

The hardest lesson to learn when digging yourself out of debt is that the credit card companies don’t care about you. They don’t care if you are struggling. They don’t care if you can’t make the payments. They don’t care if you lose you job or take a pay cut. They don’t care if you’ve been a loyal customer for many years. They just want their money. So if you don’t pay, or if you pay late, prepare to face the consequences.

These days the banks are less likely to cut you a deal. So make sure you pay on time, and make sure you can afford to make your payments, before you pull out your credit card! Because if you call the banks looking for help, don’t be surprised if they say “sorry pal, there’s nothing we can do to help”.
